Best in Show - Saskatchewan Wearable Art Gala

Last night I received the award for "Best in Show" for the entry Paper Princess. I worked with Janet Taylor (seamstress) to make my vision come true.

Artist’s Statement

The Paper Princess was inspired by the piece “Never-Ending”, a sculptural print by Monique Martin.  Fabric and paper were printed with the words fame, fortune and happiness.  A corset and matching skirt were then created with the fabric and clusters of Mobius strips (twisted cylinders) were made from strips of the paper.  These clusters adorn the dress and symbolize the never-ending quest for fame, fortune and happiness with which many in our society are obsessed.

Materials and Processes Used

Dress

fabric (taffeta, cotton, polyester, tulle) gros-grain ribbon, zipper, grommets, boning, thread, hook and eyes, paper (print run ends from a print shop), ink, safety pins, re-purposed jewelry and
buttons

Hat
plastic Christmas tree stand, foam core board, silver-foil tape, hummingbird nest, glue sticks, white glue, re-purposed jewelry and buttons, bubble wrap, rock

24 foot Woodcut of Bees

This 24 foot print was hard to plan, hard to carve from wood, hard to execute the printing on something this large and hard to hang, but super satisfying. Watch for it at the following galleries.

Okotoks Art Gallery May/June 2016 (if it fits)
Kootenay Art Gallery August/September 2016 (it will fit here and the gallery is a hexagon shape which will totally complement the piece)
Saskatchewan Craft Council in October/November 2016 (I know it fits here, that's where this picture is taken)
Humboldt Art Gallery  January-March 2018 (I know it will fit here)

Born Twice - Beehive Frame Mobile

This is an actual beehive frame with a version of the bee lifecycle suspended from it. The suspended parts are 3-6 colour reductive technique linocuts that are covered in beeswax.  The frame still has come honeycomb on it.
